Beach of the Week: Cayucos, California

Cayucos, CA Beach
The pier in Cayucos, CA
For a special Independence Day Edition of Beach of the Week, let's head to Cayucos, California.  Cayucos is a small beach town on the Central California coast, full of charm, character, mild weather, and of course, a beautiful beach.  All the beach town essentials are accounted for: surf shop, tshirt boutique, ice cream, great restaurants, white sand and gentle waves.  Yet its vibe is more relaxed & friendly than bustling & touristy, meaning it often appears on "best kept secret" type lists.

Cayucos is a fantastic destination any time of year, but come 4th of July, it's a truly special place.  The entire town transforms into a delightful portrait of patriotism.  Houses and businesses throughout the town are swathed in bunting, evoking an almost Norman Rockwell sensibility.  There is, of course, a 4th of July parade, featuring homespun floats and local characters.  The day continues with Americana goodness, including a sandcastle building contest on the beach, barbecue at the Vet's Hall, a peddler's fair, and finally - obviously - culminates in a spectacular fireworks display over the bay.  What a wonderful way to celebrate the nation's independence!

Happy Fourth of July!
