Beach of the Week: Key West, Florida

A path to paradise in Key West, Florida.

The school year’s wrapping up, and everyone’s getting into vacation mode.  Let’s all to “go down to Kokomo” with a virtual trip to Key West, Florida.  Key West is the southernmost city in the Continental U.S., so you know it has a gorgeous, tropical climate.  On top of the weather, Key West has a lot to offer: Caribbean inspired food (and cocktails), rich music, wonderful galleries and shops, diving, boating, snorkeling, fishing… the list goes on.  But, of course, our sights are set on the beach!  Though Key West isn’t known as a beach destination, it does have some lovely options to whet your beach whistle.

Smather’s Beach is a nice place to start: it’s two miles long, with beach chair rentals, food, drinks and all the beach activities you could hope for.  The water here is calm, and just right for swimmers and snorkelers.  Fort Zachary Taylor State Park mixes a history lesson with a beach day.  Explore the Civil War era fort, then kick back on the beach and enjoy the popular views.  Higgs Beach is known for having a mellower vibe, and offers a pier, a playground and restaurants nearby.

Have you vacationed in the Florida Keys?  What was your favorite part?
