Sun Care: The Importance of Sun Protection in the Fall

Sunny fall days call for Sun Protection

As we move into full-on Fall mode, it’s easy to get apathetic about our sun product regimen.  The days are shorter, cooler, and they just feel a bit … less sunny.  But when it comes to protecting your skin from the sun, you should never let your guard down.

Just like in Summer time, those UV rays can potentially cause sunburn, wrinkles, skin damage and lead to skin cancer.   In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends wearing sunscreen every day you’ll be outside – year round.

So how do you keep your sun protected in Autumn?  Some suggestions!

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen: it protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays.  Look for high quality ingredients and an SPF of 30 or higher.  We love COOLA’s products for their great formulations and light, refreshing scents.  (We also love that they score really well in EWG’s Skin Deep database!)  Remember to apply sunscreen liberally, and re-apply every two hours (or after getting wet).

Wear a hat!  The simple addition of a sun hat offers so much protection.  Consider the brim: the larger it is, the more protection it will provide.  Look for a hat that is rated UPF 50+, meaning it provides the maximum amount of sun protection.  And definitely choose a hat you love!  With the enormous selection of sun hats available, it’s easy to maintain (and enhance!) your style while shielding your face from the suns’ rays.  And don’t think that a sun hat won’t mesh with your Fall wardrobe, just check out these ideas for sun hats that transition seamlessly to Fall.

Sunglasses: always chic, always ready to accessorize, and always a vital part of your sun care strategy.  Donning a great pair of sunnies is the quickest way to glam up your look.  They’re as important on a sunny Fall afternoon as they are on a hot Summer day.  Look for a pair that have a UV 400 rating, this means that the lenses have the highest level of protection, as they block the sun’s harmful rays including UVA and UVB.

Carry a parasol.  Use of sun umbrellas is becoming more widespread, and it’s easy to see why.  They’re the ultimate portable shade: they provide ample coverage, can be angled as needed, and toted anywhere.  Persolé sun umbrellas provide maximum sun protection with their 50+ UPF fabrics, 35 inch diameter opening and strong and lightweight frame.  They also deliver high fashion with gorgeous fabrics and glamorous details such as Swarovski accents.  Bonus: a Persolé is waterproof… just in case you’re surprised by a Fall shower!
